A woman was stabbed outside a childcare centre in Sydney’s east after a loud argument between two men rang out through the busy street, witnesses say.

The 36-year-old victim was taken to hospital as police investigate the incident which took place in the suburb of Bondi Beach just a block from the famous beach itself.

Police tape was cordoning off a small patch of land between the Wayside Chapel community service centre and the Iluka Early Learning Centre next door.

Neighbours told news.com.au they saw a man “yelling” at another man who appeared to be walking down the street with a woman.

One witness said the man who was “screaming” had been standing just inside the gate of the Wayside Chapel centre.

Another said he saw the second man take off his shirt before the two men moved around the street but added tensions appeared to calm down.

He later came back outside his home when police swarmed the area to learn a woman had been stabbed.

Wayside Chapel and Uniting, which runs the childcare centre, has been contacted for comment.

People could be seen standing outside the venue speaking with police officers.

Police said that just before 11am, police were called to Roscoe Street, Bondi Beach, after reports of a stabbing.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 36-year-old woman for a head injury before she was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

“A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has commenced,” police said in a statement.
